WandaVision Commercial Breakdown
WandaVision is the twisted, shrouded in mystery, all-American sitcom the world never knew they needed until now! Taking us on a trip through the ages and many stages of television, the MCU Disney+ show keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole season. The series takes place directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame and the reversal of the blimp (about 2 to 3 weeks after to be exact). Grief stricken and alone, Wanda is trapped in a fantasy world that distracts her from the crushing pain she is experiencing from all of her loss. This fantasy takes form as a television series; each episode presenting a different decade. The one thing that remains constant throughout are the presence of commercials with deep seeded meanings and interconnecting details to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics. In this post we go through all the commercials we’ve seen and their deeper meaning.
Episode 1: Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience - Toast Mate 2000:
The first episode of WandaVision brings us a commercial for the new and improved toaster, the Toast Mate 2000, by Stark Industries. Presented with the slogan, “Forget the past, this is your future!” this toaster gives us a direct link to the Starks through the toaster’s creator. The connection to Stark Industries is a meaningful one for Wanda. This is due to the fact Stark Industries was the one who created the bomb that killed Wanda’s parents and left her and her twin brother, Pietro, buried under a pile of rubble when they were 10 years old. The twins, while buried for two days, could only lay there in terror, watching the little blinking red light and listening to the continuous beeping of the mortar shell. Could this memory be reflected in the flashing red light of the toaster as it counts down in a menacing manner? Do you think the toaster symbolizes that very bomb?
Episode 2: Don’t Touch That Dial - Strücker Wristwatches:
Episode two of WandaVision brings on a new commercial with a potential new connection to Wanda’s past. At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we find out a man named Baron Wolfgang von Strücker, one of the last remaining members of HYDRA, has been experimenting on Sokovian volunteers. In a project titled the ‘Miracles Program’, Strücker used Loki’s stolen scepter (which contained the Mind Stone) to experiment on volunteers in the hopes of making HYDRA super soldiers. The Maximoff twins, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, were the only survivors. These experiments are what is believed to have birthed Wanda and her brother’s powers. Could this commercial be another connection to Wanda’s past and suppressed memories? Do you think she is the one suppressing them, or someone more sinister?
Episode 3: Now in Color - Hydra Soak Luxury Bath Powder:
In episode three, we see what could be another reference to the sinister HYDRA organization. In this commercial, we see a mother whose day seems to have nothing go right. The announcer, the same that can be heard in the first two commercials, asks the overworked woman if she “needs a break.” After the events of Avengers: Endgame, we don’t know about you, but Wanda seemed to be in serious need of a break. The next line, spoken by the woman playing the ‘mom’ in the commercial is, “You read my mind.” Could this be a reference to what we saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron; Wanda having the ability to manipulate and see into other people’s minds? The announcer continues on, saying: “Escape to a world all your own. Where your problems float away. When you want to get away, but you don’t want to go anywhere. Hydra Soak, find the goddess within!” Could this be a nod to the fact that the town of Westview has become an escape from the outside world for Wanda, and “a world all to your own” for Wanda, Vision, and their new little family?
Episode 5: On a Very Special Episode... - Lagos Brand Paper Towels:
“Lagos: For when you make a mess you didn’t mean to.” Episode five brings on yet another reference to The Avengers with the mention of Lagos. Could this be a reference back to Lagos, Nigeria, the location of Wanda’s first mission as an Avenger, seen in the beginning of Captain America: Civil War? During this mission, the Avengers are attempting to stop Brock Rumlow, also known as Crossbones, an ex-HYDRA terrorist, who stole a biological weapon from the Institute for Infectious Diseases. In an attempt to save Captain America, Wanda redirects a vest bomb, accidentally blowing up part of an apartment building and killing innocent Wakandan aid workers. This event scarred Wanda deeply, as the news reported it as being primarily her fault, which caused her extreme guilt over what she had done. The events in Lagos were also the final straw leading to the Sokovia Accords, which allowed the government to closely monitor the Avengers, placed Wanda under “house arrest”, and eventually caused a rift within the Avengers that would not be fixed until the events of Thanos. Do you think this is the “mess” Wanda didn’t mean to make
Episode 6: All-New Halloween Spooktacular! - Yo-Magic Yogurt:
In the sixth episode of WandaVision we experience a claymation yogurt commercial reminiscent of the 90’s. Taking us back, the ‘Yo-Magic’ yogurt commercial brings us old school Go-Gurt yogurt vibes. The commercial features a young child, stranded all alone on an island, desperate, ready to do anything to survive and relieve himself of his suffering. A shark appears, seemingly with the solution, ‘Yo-Magic’ yogurt. Even though the child has the yogurt in hand, he is unable to open the lid and ease his hunger; therefore he slowly withers away. Could the boy represent Wanda and his endless hunger represent how Wanda felt after the loss of both her brother, Pietro, and Vision? Feeling alone and stranded, do you think Wanda would do anything to ease her pain? Is it possible the shark swimming in with the ‘Yo-Magic’ yogurt represents the Hex she created, which seemingly gave her the solution to her suffering? Just like the boy not being able to open the yogurt lid, could Wanda’s solution (the Hex) become just another problem?
Episode 7: Breaking the Fourth Wall - Nexus Medication:
Episode seven, ‘Breaking the Fourth Wall,’ packed a punch; taking us on all sorts of twists and turns! One thing that was consistent was the presence of a mid-show commercial utilizing the same woman from the previous ones. In this commercial, we get an ad with a unique anti-depression medication called Nexus. The voice over in the ad gives us all the information we need to decipher it: “Feeling depressed? Like the world goes on without you? Do you just want to be left alone? Ask your doctor about Nexus! A unique antidepressant that works to anchor you back to your reality. Or the reality of your choice. Side effects include: Feeling your feelings; Confronting your truth; Seizing your destiny; and Possibly more depression. You should not take Nexus unless your doctor has cleared you to move on with your life. Nexus, because the world doesn’t revolve around you. Or does it?” Could Nexus in this commercial possibly refer to the Nexus of All Realities, a cross-dimensional gateway that provides a pathway to all possible realities? Maybe it could be a nod to the fact in the comics, Scarlet Witch is a Nexus Being and serves as the anchor of her reality. Like the commercial states, Wanda found herself in a deep depression after losing Vision, twice. Feeling lost without him, and trying to readjust after being brought back from the blimp, could she have used something like the commercial Nexus medication to “anchor herself back to the reality of her choice;” the one where she did not have to confront her feelings and fears?
